Review of The Price Of Sin

A German singer-songwriter? Do we really need one? Yes, we definitely do because this one named Markus Rill has delivered a really fantastic record with The Price Of Sin. An album which - fortunately - never sounds German but is instead deeply rooted in American roots music. The Price Of Sin was recorded in Nashville where Markus Rill was assisted by a number of excellent musicians and an experienced producer. At no single moment is the result inferior to the work of his American colleagues in the roots genre.
The instrumentation on The Price Of Sin is splendid and versatile, the production excellent but what really makes trhe album special is Markus Rill's sandpaper voice (here and there it reminds us of Tom Waits) and the haunting and extraordinarily moving songs he has written. The Price Of Sin has everything that we hope for in a singer-songwriter album. A CD which you can't stop playing and playing until you feel like Markus Rill is your room mate. An album that continues to grow with every listen and to become ever dearer to the listener's heart.
