Can't Help Myself
(words & music by Markus Rill)

My good Spanish friend Lluis Sala had asked me to collaborate on a poem/song lyric with him. We emailed back and forth a bunch of times and when we toured in Spain, he asked me to set the poem to music. I tried but, for the life of me, I've never been able to co-write. I took Lluis's first line (which by the way, is terrific) and ran with it. We arranged it on stage at sound check in a little bar in this Spanish seaside town Llanca, much to the chagrin of the early afternoon patrons. They applauded when we were done with it…I suppose they were glad they could go back to sipping their beers undisturbed.
Ramblers, they are one-way travelers
Better be glad to see 'em gone
Many a time I watched that lonesome stretch of highway
Way before the break of dawn

And I watched you in your sleep
As you lay curled up in your dreams
You been dreamin' of a fine, safe home
I gotta tell ya I got dreams of my own

I can hear the highway callin'
And I'm under her spell
I wish that you could hold me and help me
But I can't help myself

I know I should be happy with my life
An honest working job and a faithful loving wife
Tell the Lord I know I cannot complain
But just the same, I can't stay

'cause I can hear the highway callin'
And I'm under her spell
I wish that you could hold me and help me
But I can't help myself

And the spell cannot be broken
No matter how I try
So I won't leave you a token of my love
and you'll forget me by and by
I'll regret leaving you with every mile

I can hear the highway callin'
And I'm under her spell
I wish that you could hold me and help me
But I can't help myself
